 Renaming a file using ASP.NET 2.0 and VB .NET

This tutorial will show you how to rename a file on the disk using ASP.NET 2.0 and VB.NET The .NET Framework offers a number of types that makes accessing resources on filesystems easy to use.

We moved our web sites to Server Intellect and have found them to be incredibly professional. Their setup is very easy and we were up and running in no time.

To rename a simple file on the disk, we will need to first import the System.IO namespace. The System.IO namespace contains the File.Delete() method and FileInfo type that we will use to perform our delete with.

Imports System.IO

We'll put our code in the btnSubmit_Click() event.

When the btnSubmit_Click() event fires it first checks to see if the file exists using the FileInfo type. If it exists it runs the File.Move() method to rename it, otherwise it throws a FileNotFoundException which is caught by one of the catch statements below the try block.

Protected Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click
Try
Dim TheFile As FileInfo = New FileInfo(MapPath(".") & "\" & txtOldFile.Text)
If TheFile.Exists Then
File.Move(MapPath(".") & "\" & txtOldFile.Text, MapPath(".") & "\" & txtNewFile.Text)
Else
Throw New FileNotFoundException()
End If

Catch ex As FileNotFoundException
lblStatus.Text += ex.Message
Catch ex As Exception
lblStatus.Text += ex.Message
End Try
End Sub

We have one textbox,a Submit button, a label, and a checkbox on the front end for user interaction. The front end .aspx page looks something like this:

<table width="600" border="0" align="center" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="1" bgcolor="#cccccc">
<tr>
<td width="100" align="right" bgcolor="#eeeeee" class="header1"> Renaming a File:</td>
<td align="center" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
Old File File:<asp:TextBox ID="txtOldFile" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> <br />
New File Name:<asp:TextBox ID="txtNewFile" runat="server" Width="126px"></asp:TextBox><br />
<asp:Button ID="btnSubmit" runat="server" Text="Submit" OnClick="btnSubmit_Click" /><br />&nbsp;
<asp:label ID="lblStatus" runat="server"></asp:label></td>
</tr>
</table>

The flow for the code behind page is as follows.

Imports System.IO
Partial Class _Default
Inherits System.Web.UI.Page

Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load

End Sub

Protected Sub btnSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnSubmit.Click
Try
Dim TheFile As FileInfo = New FileInfo(MapPath(".") & "\" & txtOldFile.Text)
If TheFile.Exists Then
File.Move(MapPath(".") & "\" & txtOldFile.Text, MapPath(".") & "\" & txtNewFile.Text)
Else
Throw New FileNotFoundException()
End If

Catch ex As FileNotFoundException
lblStatus.Text += ex.Message
Catch ex As Exception
lblStatus.Text += ex.Message
End Try
End Sub
End Class
