To begin, first you must reflect on what exactly you need to start development. Most projects require some kind of database for data persistence. If you do not already have a place to store your data, Visual Web Developer comes with a lightweight database server for this purpose, called SQL Server Express. This is a free “light-weight” version of SQL Server 2005. Also included in the install is MSDN Express Library. The MSDN Express Library contains additional product documentation for Visual Studio Express and is recommended if you arent familiar with Visual Studios.

Once you’ve decided what you need, download the latest Visual Web Developer. Make sure you meet the system requirements listed on the page and then continue with the installation after downloading.

The setup will download the rest of the install from the Internet so make sure you are still connected when you run the setup file. The setup will also ask you to install any optional software (such as SQL Server Express or MSDN Express Library) whether or not you install these depend on your own personal requirements.

Once downloaded, the install will begin. You don’t have to be connected to the Internet at this point.

Once the installation is complete you are all done, you may want to register the software as you can only use it for 30 days without registering it.
